American Portraits: No. 13 by Nullermanden American Portraits: No. 13 by Nullermanden

Boston, Massachusetts

'Patrick'

"I didn't do it! I have an alibi!!!"

Those were the first words that met me when I asked this homeless guy, wandering around a park in Boston, if he had a second to spare. He then turned around, twitched for a second, and looked back at me - and I laughed and told him that I only wanted a photo of him. Earlier, I had walked past him when he was rattling a cup with change - and that's when he got my attention; out of the blue, and aimed at no one in particular, he said loudly: "Somebody call an ambulance... I'm gonna get beat up tonight...". Later, when I walked past him again, I was too intrigued to not stop and ask him for a portrait.

He never told me the reason to the exclamation earlier, but he did tell me, that the reason he ended up on the street, was because he once got robbed in an alley, where he got his face crushed by a metal pipe. Apparently, the blow had slightly damaged his brain too, and because of that, he somehow ended up walking the bostonian streets.

You're probably thinking 'that doesn't really make any sense' - and honestly, I couldn't agree more - but that was all he told me before he suddenly had to go - and I wished him good luck with his night.

You've created an amazing series here--not only are the photographs wonderful, but hearing the stories of the people who the faces belong to is also very interesting.

He seems to have a face that draws you in, if that makes sense? As if you want to know more.

Wonderful photo

It would actually make sense, because the social security system sucks in the US, so if he wasn't able to work, he might not have enough money to live if differently.

I don't know if anyone else has said this, but the brain damage leading him to be on the street might have been the result of being in a mental hospital for it. This is why there is a cliche that homeless people are crazy- sometimes they are given a clean bill of mental health, but they don't have anywhere else to go besides the mental hospital. So they can end up on the street.

interesting face.....theory about 'call an ambulance'..everybody was walking by..not seeing him..not caring..if i were him i would have yelled out also....i bet nothing happened - no one questioned......

he might not have been working much..maybe not at all....whatever he had could have been lost since his injury.......the US hospitals are not very sympathetic about people who have no money.......anyway, i guess he is just trying to justify his life.....

The best thing about this portrait is the story. In my opinion he looks a bit...normal, but a bit wacked...I guess.

*can't really explain*.

that story about the pipe makes perfect sense to me... his damaged brain probably did not allow him to hold a job, and boom, he was on the street. =(

The folks you photograph always seem so jolly!!

You know, I've realized what has kept me so addicted to this series. It's not just the portraits that keep me coming back, but the stories that you have with all of these people. The portraits are amazing, but the stories make them so much more. ^-^

This photograph is awesome, he certianly seems like an interesting man.

I love eccentrics, your series is great...but personally i think it's getting a bit too long for a digital portrfolio, it kinda diminishes the power in your gallery. I also checked out your Youtube site last night, and the video of you running through the streets at night is really cool, the dentist one is very creative, and the street one is inspiring...you should post more 'decisive - moment' photo's.

his eyes and wrinkles make me happy, and i like the fact that he looks more natural and human than the other portraits, it just seems to accentuate his features more.
